The far right and its hatred, sooner or later, turns against everyone—Let’s defend democracy

19 December 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Yesterday’s attack on the home of artist Giorgos Gavriel to frighten him, as well as the third case of Nazi salutes in schools, follow all the other cases of far-right actions that are escalating constantly. This situation should act as a wake-up call for every democratic Cypriot. Our country is facing the threat of a fascist far right that is becoming more aggressive every day and threatens to destroy the country once again.

The government and state institutions bear a huge responsibility. The Ministry of Education has not been moved to take any action against the activities of the far right in schools. The Deputy Ministry of Culture has not yet felt the need to say a single word about the organized targeting of an artist. The police authorities have not brought anyone to justice for the fascist attack that was waged on the Club of the Peoples Movement of the Left in Lakatamia, or for dozens of other incidents of racist and blatant hate speech on social media. Even greater is the political responsibility of the leadership of the DISY Democratic Rally party, which has now openly sided with far-right ELAM and is competing in extremist actions.

AKEL recalls that for years it has been warning about the rise of the far right and the dangers of normalising its parliamentary wing. It also recalls that the far right and its hatred will sooner or later turn against everyone. All Cypriots who are aware of the dangerous path that Cypriot society is being led down have a duty to rally forces to defend democratic freedoms and human rights, to defend democracy in our country.
