The Education Minister’s arrogance and authoritarianism is damaging the country’s education system

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th December 2020, Nicosia

The arrogance and authoritarianism of the Minister of Education is causing damage to the country’s education system.

Teachers, school students and parents are addressing an appeal for the four-monthly exams not to take place this year, due to the situation created in our schools by the pandemic, but the Education Minister refuses any discussion on the issue.

At the same time, the Education Minister either does not know or does not admit what the reality is in schools: the difficulties of distance learning and the problems with the curriculum, but also the fact that hundreds of school pupils are isolating at home. In essence, the Minister wants to ignore the fact that inequalities are being created between school students and a huge upheaval in schools.

We call on the Minister of Education to put aside the authoritarian behaviour and listen to school students and teachers.
