The antifascist Resistance is vindicated with our country’s liberation and reunification
AKEL on the Day of Democratic Resistance
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th December 2020, Nicosia
The Day of Democratic Resistance is a day of honor and expressing gratitude towards all those who in July 1974 confronted and fought against the forces of the fascist coup d’état in the front lines of the armed resistance, in the torture chambers and interrogations and in the popular demonstrations that took place. It is a day that defends memory and the truth, our people’s History and struggles. It represents our constant duty towards the heroes of Democracy and the Republic, but also to the young generation that is entitled to know the true History of our homeland.
December 7, 1974, the day of Makarios’ return to Cyprus and to the Presidency, was and remains a landmark in the history of our country. Our suffering bleeding people, who were still burying their dead and living in tents as refugees, demonstrated at an astounding massive rally on that day that they would not compromise with the NATO crime of the partition of our island and that they would not forgive the betrayal committed by the Greek junta and EOKA B.
For AKEL, the memory and honor of the Democratic Resistance serves and is part of the relentless struggle so that the crime committed in 1974 will not prevail once and for all, so that the anti-fascist Resistance is vindicated through the liberation and reunification of our homeland. December 7th is not just about the historical past. It equally concerns the present and the future we want for our Homeland.
