The Education Minister seems to live in his own imaginary world

Statement by Education Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL Christos Christofides on the situation in schools

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th December 2020, Nicosia

At the same time as the situation in our schools is constantly deteriorating, the Minister of Education continues to act indifferently and not realize the reality in schools. While teachers, students and parents, who are living this reality every day, are trying to explain to the Minister what is really going on, he seems to live in his own imaginary world.

The authoritarianist insistence on conducting exams every four months in these very difficult conditions is truly astonishing.

The Secondary state teachers’ trade union OELMEK stated yesterday that approximately 2,500 school students are in quarantine. Schools have been closed in Limassol and Paphos for a long period of time. Specific classes have been quarantined at home. Distance learning faces a great number of problems due to the lack of technological infrastructure that has led to the notorious statement “teachers should use their own equipment”. There is no plan in place to deal with the cold in school student’s classrooms. We are still waiting for the single desks which should have been ready by the summer.

In the face of this situation, the Minister of Education is only interested in imposing his opinion and conducting exams every four months. We appeal to the Minister of Education to finally realize the situation and cancel the four monthly exams for this year which will simply burden teachers, students and parents with additional stress and numerous problems.
