The dangerous path of EU militarisation

AKEL – PRESS RELEASE

The European Council meeting to be held tomorrow (6/2/2025) is crucial for the future of our continent.

The leadership of the European Union is preparing to escalate the militarisation and war armaments in an unprecedented way, to intensify the arming of the Zelensky government, refusing to take initiatives to end the war, for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen is proposing to mobilise EUR 800 billion for war expenditure, while at the same time proposing that war expenditure by the states should not be subject to budgetary rules. All this at a time when in the last four years the military expenditure of European states has increased by more than 30%, reaching 326 billion euros. In other words, when EU leaders want to serve the war industries, they ‘forget’ about budgetary discipline. All these billions will be taken away from the development and social spending that the states and peoples of Europe need at a time when they are being crushed by sharp price hike and energy poverty.

AKEL points out that this path is dead-end, dangerous and certainly is not the right side of history. On the contrary, the history of Europe clearly shows where militarism and the arms race are leading.
