The country has more serious problems than the communication needs of ruling DISY

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th December 2020, Nicosia

Although the country has more serious problems than the communication needs of ruling DISY, nevertheless I am obliged to comment on yesterday’s melodramatic appeal issued by DISY President A. Neophytou in Parliament. It’s easy for someone to resort to belated pompous big talk. The difficult thing to do is for the ruling DISY party to also take on its own share of the government’s responsibilities for the current deadlock. This is something I referred to extensively in my speech yesterday (in the plenary debate on the 2021 state budget)

Government authoritarianism, arrogance and despotism have cut the bridges of communication with society. Instead of seeking consensus, they waved their fingers at us and engaged in scaremongering. This, as expected, was reflected in the discussion on the state budget in Parliament. They should realise the responsibility that weighs on them for the necessary consensus to be created that will get us out of the possible impasse.

We have said it once again that there are no dead ends in democracy. In any case, AKEL as a responsible political force was and is ready to discuss on the basis of policies that it deems beneficial for the country and people. The responsibility for any moves lies with the government, which instead of wasting time with theatrical games and scaremongering it would help if it at long lasted with the due seriousness.
