The British are circulating old and dangerous ideas

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

13 September 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The “new ideas” being circulated by the British are old and dangerous, since they refer to a succession of states, not to mention to a confederal formation. They take apart the existing body of work that has been recorded which is the result of many decades of negotiations, approach the partitionist demands of Turkey-Tatar and undermine the prospects for a solution and the reunification of our country. AKEL rejects these ideas and calls on the government to do the same in a decisive manner.

For sure, everyone understands that the British initiatives without the agreement of others are being manifested within a specific context. On the one hand, Ersin Tatar is demanding and insisting on a two state solution which is not accepted by the international community and certainly not by our people. On the other hand, however, Mr. Anastasiades’ backtrackings and regressions within and outside the framework of the UN Resolutions, the President’s messy playing around with the Guterres Framework, the questioning of the convergences that have been recorded and his recent ideas about a return to the 1960 Constitution have contributed and are contributing to the reproduction of this dangerous situation, which permit third parties to submit such ideas.

AKEL is adamant on the position that the talks must resume from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana because – as everyone admits – at that very point we were extremely close a solution of the Cyprus problem. This, after all, was also the position of the UN after Crans Montana, as recorded in repeated Reports submitted by the Secretary General of the UN and this is precisely what everyone must adhere to if they are genuinely seeking a speedy solution to the Cyprus problem.
