AKEL on the visit of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to Cyprus

The visit of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell to Cyprus and the statements in solidarity with Cyprus, its sovereignty and sovereign rights are undoubtedly positive.
The big question, of course, remains how this solidarity in the face of Turkey’s aggression will be expressed in a practical way, given that there are already an abundance of positions and statements that have been expressed on the part of the EU. The government needs to clarify what its expectations are for tangible results from this visit, but first and foremost from the wider Euro-Turkish dialogue that seems to be opening up.
Our goal and priority must be the de-escalation of the tension, the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework, something which will remove any pretexts Turkey could cite not to enter into a dialogue for the demarcation of the maritime zones in the Eastern Mediterranean. AKEL considers that this must be the government’s goal.
