The Anastasiades government is endangering the production of haloumi

Statement by AKEL Left New Forces MP Giannakis Gavriel

12 July 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The reports that have come to light about complaints filed against Cyprus for not applying the PDO regulation for halloumi is very worrying.

It is now clear that the Anastasiades-DISY government, so as to back specific powerful economic interests, is making various excuses and avoiding the implementation of what has been approved at an EU level for PDO halloumi.

Its refusal for almost a year now to implement the relevant European Regulation and its unwillingness to clash with the above-mentioned powerful economic interests, poses huge dangers for the production of haloumi and is jeopardizing the success of the product’s registration as a Protected Designation of Origin product.

Following last week’s meeting of farmers’ organisations and sheep and goat farmers, at which they unanimously rejected the government’s unacceptable proposals for the umpteenth time, AKEL reiterates for the umpteenth time that the government must immediately put an end to the dangerous experimentations on the issue of haloumi and faithfully implement national legislation and everything that has been approved by the EU.
