The Anastasiades-DISY government’s scandals in the golden passport scheme are endless
Statement by AKEL – Left – New Forces Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loucaides
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th November 2020, Nicosia
The scandals of the Anastasiades-DISY government in relation to the golden passport scheme do not appear to have any end. The new report released by the Audit Office again reveals all sorts of astonishing details.
In total, the citizenships granted all the 27 persons of the casino are presented as illegal, even on the basis of the weakened criteria which the current government had itself introduced.
Similarly, in the case of another company, for at least 64 directors and employees who were granted citizenship, this appears to have taken place as a result of the abuse of power, in violation of the legal and regulatory framework in force and through fictitious real estate transactions. Some of these persons were alleged to be residing even in empty plots or parking lots.
The Report released by the Audit Office leaves the Anastasiades-DISY government ONCE again irreparably exposed, which appears to have gone to all lengths to serve the golden passport scheme, repeatedly discrediting our country all over the world.
AKEL yet again calls on the government and the President of the Republic to take on their responsibilities in practice for the formation and defence, but also for the family or personal exploitation by some of them, of this rotten – as they themselves have turned it into – honorary citizenship scheme.
At the same time, we call on the Attorney General to proceed to carry out a criminal investigation, based on the findings of the relevant report, instead of indirectly threatening the Auditor General for publicizing it.
The Audit Office did nothing more than what it is obliged to do according to the Constitution and the country’s laws. Besides, it did the same thing, without any issues being raised, last September with regards the 5 citizenship cases that it examined by sampling, making the relevant findings known to the public, while the investigation committee had already been appointed.
