The Anastasiades-DISY government has systematically failed to combat corruption and on environmental policy

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th May 2020, Nicosia

The European Commission has decided to send eight letters of formal notice, one reasoned opinion and a referral to the European Court of Justice against Cyprus, due to the government’s failure to communicate a series of European directives in a timely and correct manner. We single out two major issues on which the Anastasiades-DISY government has systematically failed, exposing our country across the whole of Europe and internationally: with regards the combatting of corruption and on environmental policy.

Cyprus is being accused that it has failed to communicate the 5th Directive on the combating of the legalisation of revenues from illegal activities. In other words, at a time when Cyprus is being accused internationally as a money launderer and as a passport sales business, the government is not even doing the basics, that is, closing the legal loopholes, and by doing so further tarnishing our country.

On environmental policy, Cyprus is being exposed due to the government’s inaction on the national air pollution control program, as well as with regards the crucial Directive to assess the environmental impact before the approval of any public or private project. Hence, citizens shouldn’t wonder how illegal and anti-environmental developments/projects are springing up all over Cyprus, and how procedures and controls are being bypassed to serve powerful private interests.

Since the government ruling forces do not listen to people’s demands and aspirations on these issues and given that they don’t take into account the proposals submitted by the opposition, let them at least comply with European obligations.
