Decisions on education yesterday proof of disorganisation
Statement by Christos Christofides, Head of the Education Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th May 2020, Nicosia
The government’s new decisions and announcements yesterday regarding the opening of schools, are proof of the disorganisation with which plans on Education are proceeding until now, provoking growing insecurity among people. The new decisions taken not to open kindergartens, daycare centres and the 1st and 2nd grade Lyceum were not based on any new epidemiological data. They were the result of the absence of a comprehensive plan; the result of previous sloppy decisions and the inability to make the correct arrangements.
So what has changed since the previous decision of the government a week ago? If the decision was taken because kindergarten children cannot apply hygiene rules, this was the same argument used a week ago. If it was because the critical 3rd grade Lyceum and Pancyprian exams could not operate in the presence of school students of the first and second grade Lyceums, then this was the case a week ago. The very same chaotic decisions for videotaping the lessons which in the end are also irregular and for the teachers to take children to school are decisions that were announced and subsequently withdrawn, constantly creating numerous problems.
Unfortunately, hasty and unsubstantiated decisions are being taken, to be canceled out after a few days, and hence a real mess is created. The government’s behavior on Education creates insecurity and concern for students, parents, teachers and working people employed in public education.
We hope that our children, teachers and all the working people in our schools will have a good return to school, with health and safety always.
