The aim should be to convince and not clash with the United Nations and its officials
3 July 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The option of the Cypriot government and the Greek Cypriot leadership to clash with the United Nations didn’t yield good results whenever it has been tried in the past. AKEL stresses that the aim should be to convince and not clash with the international organisation and its officials. Not because they are infallible, but because the UN is the arena for asserting the Cypriot people’s rights against the Turkish occupation and our homeland’s division.
AKEL will not tire of pointing out that we all need to see the big picture of the Cyprus problem, which is not only disappointing and stagnant, but also dangerous for our country and people. Any prolongation of the stalemate or a new collapse will be disastrous, if not fatal, for the cause of the Cyprus problem, for Cyprus and the future generations.
AKEL reiterates the three pillars that should have and must, in our view, govern the policy of the Greek Cypriot side and the Republic of Cyprus in general:
- Absolute commitment to the solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality and a readiness to continue the talks on the basis of the Guterres Framework, preserving all the convergences recorded during the negotiation procedure. No footnotes, no mincing of words.
- Formulation of a positive agenda in the field of energy developments and facts in the region.
- Additional measures towards the Turkish Cypriot community and in favour of bicommunal cooperation.
