Tackling the pandemic can’t be limited to citizen’s personal responsibility

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th November 2020, Nicosia

Our country must combat the pandemic and its socio-economic consequences with determination, so that it can return to regular living conditions as soon as possible.

We point out, of course, that within the framework of measures it is imperative that solutions are provided for practical issues with regards categories of citizens and professionals affected by the government’s announcements yesterday. Measures must be taken to support working people and professionals affected by the measures and who will find themselves with reduced or zero incomes.

Of course, tackling the pandemic cannot be limited to the personal responsibility of citizens to comply with protection measures.

An equally important factor in addressing the consequences of the coronavirus is the question of hospitalization and health care. The government, together with the state health services (OKYPY), have the responsibility to support and strengthen public hospitals so that they can meet the great needs that exist.

We point out that eight months after the outbreak of the pandemic, public hospitals are collapsing, unprepared and understaffed to confront the second wave of the coronavirus. It is the government ruling force’s responsibility to solve the problems and shortcomings that appear, which should have been resolved promptly.

We call on the government belatedly to immediately and decisively provide support to public hospitals.
