System change, not climate change

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th September 2019, Nicosia

clımate protestsAKEL supports the GLOBAL protest rallies currently being organized across Europe and around the world on climate change. AKEL welcomes the mobilization of the young generation that has taken place today.

The effects of climate change are already visible, and the poorer countries are bearing to a greater extent the brunt of the impacts and disasters associated with the climate. It is crucially important not only to implement the Paris Agreement, but to set even more ambitious goals.

The issue of the environmental and ecological crisis is a political, economic and social issue. Only with a sustainable model of development can people and the natural environment survive by having real choices and for our planet to remain able to accommodate them.

Adaptation to the adverse effects of climate change is vitally important to alleviate the already visible impacts and to improve the preparedness and resilience to future impacts in Cyprus. This must be a matter of priority for all.

Unfortunately, due to the government’s erroneous handling of these issues, Cyprus has lagged behind both with regards reducing emissions, increasing energy production with RES, but also as regards the issue of waste management. The government ruling forces must take immediate action to address these issues in a timely manner.
