Statements by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou after the National Council session

14th January 2021

“The President of the Republic asked the political parties to express their position whether he should go to the informal five-party Conference or not.

AKEL’s position is clear. We have no choice. The President of the Republic must go to the Conference. Otherwise, we will enter into a protracted deadlock, which would bring us closer and closer to the final division of our country and people.

It is therefore imperative that we go to the Conference very well prepared of course. Are there any dangers looming, dangers which have been raised by various political parties? They are certainly looming. Unquestionably, Turkey will seek to fulfill the maximum of the goals it has set at this Conference. We have justice on our side, we have the relevant UN resolutions on our side. With a good preparation and answers to those questions that Turkey is raising publicly, we can remove any pretext, and as a result Turkey will either be forced to abandon its unacceptable and provocative positions and cooperate to resume substantive negotiations, with a view to achieving solution or it will remain exposed.

This is the very clear position that AKEL has conveyed to the President of the Republic. We have given him our positions in the letter we have sent him since last December, and we have asked him to take it very seriously into account in the difficult task he has to accomplish in going to the Conference.”
