Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, after the meeting with the Executive Bureau of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO)
11 February 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
“We had a very constructive discussion with the leadership of PEO on a very important issue on the quality of work and life of working people, which is of course determined by the rights and regulations that workers have at the workplace.
We fully agree with the positions and struggle of PEO. We are together in this struggle to establish regulations that take all workers forward. Workers need it, especially in today’s conditions, where because of the government’s socio-economic policies, but also due to the pandemic and other wider developments, such as the issue of price controls, a lot of pressure is being put on workers and households in general, and at the same time many social and economic insecurities are being provoked.
That’s precisely why AKEL is trying, in concrete ways and with the submission of specific proposals, to address these difficult problems and which must be confronted if we want to give a perspective, provide quality jobs and work to working people.
That is why, as the General Secretary of PEO has previously stated on these issues and analysed regarding the minimum wage, but also other rights such as the Cost of Living Allowance – which must be restored – and the issues of labour regulation to address the issues that have arisen in recent years, we are together and we will continue to fight together in this struggle.”
