The President of the Republic did not say anything substantive in his speech to the UN General Assembly, the former General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou noted, stressing that Nicos Anastasiades is only thinking about his posterity.

Speaking to ‘Astra’ radio, he explained that the President of the Republic should have presented and submitted a comprehensive proposal on how to resume the negotiations and how to reach an agreement for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Andros Kyprianou pointed out that nothing should have been expected from Mr.Anastasiades, given that in a few months he will no longer be the President of the country.

The former General Secretary of AKEL noted that Mr. Anastasiades only cares about how to convince public opinion that he is interested in a solution to the Cyprus problem. Indeed A.Kyprianou said that Mr. Anastasiades is not interested in starting substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem, as he said that the President knows that he would have to express a position on hot issues with regards the basis of the framework that had been defined.

Andros Kyprianou disclosed that he had held talks in 2018 with UN Assistant Secretary General Rosemary Di Carlo, making it clear to her that AKEL would not discuss anything other than what had been agreed. Her response, according to Andros Kyprianou, was that it is not the UN that was introducing “new ideas”, but Nicos Anastasiades himself. He reiterated that for a long period of time, President Anastasiades had been talking about a two state solution and stressed that the President of the Republic has lost his credibility among the international community.
