Statements by Giorgos Loukaides AKEL Parliamentary Representative on the situation in public hospitals

8 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Mr. Karotsakis, Executive Director of the Larnaca and Famagusta branch of the state health services OKYPY, yesterday and today has made very serious allegations. Allegations that do not surprise us because, unfortunately, for many years we have also been making the same complaints as AKEL. Similar complaints are being made by the trade unions of doctors, nurses and other workers and stakeholders in the public health system.

It is tragic, however, when the same things are being said by the managers of OKYPY. We have reached a point where it really can’t go on like this any longer. The management officials of OKYPY can’t talk about the serious problems that concern understaffing, infrastructures, consumables and at the same time be talking about about the operation of public hospitals themselves. Worse still, they are also talking about the prospect of selling off public hospitals.

What is now demanded is for the government ruling forces, the President of the Republic and the Minister of Health to assume their responsibilities immediately. Drastic decisions must be taken to change the situation in public hospitals because this is what public health, our patients and the need for the smooth operation and prospects of the National Health System itself demand.
