Statements by Giorgos Loukaides, AKEL Parliamentary Representative during the visit of an AKEL delegation to Frederick University

8 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for the hospitality. This is one of the many systematic contacts and meetings that we have with Frederick University, in the context of a very good cooperation that we have maintained.

I would like to take this opportunity to express our great appreciation for the work carried out by the University, and its significant contribution to university life in our country, as well as to the Cyprus economy and society as thousands of young people have graduated from this University, who today hold a number of positions in the private and public sectors.

I would also like to highlight the important role that university education plays in our country, which now contributes significantly to the GDP, as it manages to attract a large number of foreign students.

As AKEL, we have assured once again that we will stand by the University, but also by university education in general, so that they continue to develop smoothly and why not, to offer even more to the Cyprus economy and society.

More specifically, we support the justified demand for mutual recognition of qualifications between the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Republic that will provide for automatic mutual recognition of qualifications, which is critical and important and has to do with attracting students, but also with a number of other issues. We also discussed other issues that have to do with support for private universities and we are committed to studying them and taking them forward.
