Statement by the Head of the Economic Studies Bureau of AKEL Haris Polycarpou on the Government announcements

24th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

In the final stretch towards the elections, the government has suddenly discovered the welfare state. Without even pretending, it is indulging in an ongoing orgy of pre-election benefits, focusing on social groups in need of support.

What the Anastasiades-DISY government does not realize is that working people, the unemployed, pensioners and farmers have the political criteria to see through this provocative effort to fish for votes. They also have a memory so they can question the government ruling force’s credibility and their deceitful pro-people sentiments.

People remember the € 2 billion allocated for development projects over the past five years, but which have remained on paper.

Society knows that from the € 1.2 co-financed programs of the period 2014-2020, half of the fund was never made use of.

Citizens do not forget that year by year the implementation of the Government’s development budgets is getting worse. And of course they know that the DISY government have made the verb “pledge” the shortest anecdote in Cypriot political history.

After eight years of governing the country, the people won’t be fooled by the recent government announcements because the Anastasiades-DISY government has given practical examples, which doubt the National Recovery and Resilience Plan’s consistent implementation.

On 30th May, we call on citizens to unite their voice with AKEL and send a strong message to the government’s provocative policy because only with a strong AKEL will the battles in Parliament be won for the future we deserve.
