Statement by Marina Savva, member of the C.C. of ΑΚΕL, on stamping out corruption and interwoven interests
20th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
“Why should I vote? They are all corrupt”.
That’s what most people think today.
We want to convince them with our positions on the fight to stamp out corruption and entanglement/interwoven interests.
And that is why we are first and foremost strict with ourselves.
We don’t hide or remain indifferent cases of corruption and interwoven interests no matter who they may concern.
We present and make public successively and with absolute transparency, AKEL’s financial statements.
If today corruption and entanglement are the principal issue in the public debate, it is because instead of the Government and the ruling party combating the phenomenon, they play a leading role in cases with a moral deficit.
AKEL is at the forefront in Parliament in the fight against corruption.
Among the proposals AKEL has submitted and fought for their implementation, the following stand out:
- Compulsory confiscation of property of former and current state and public officials convicted of corruption and embezzlement of public money.
- Strengthen asset and funds-source declarations.
- Transparency in the ownership status of the mass media.
- Incompatibility of the provision of services to the state by companies affiliated with state officials.
- Revealing politician’s interests so that they can’t hide behind front men.
On 30th May, the rage and indignation over corruption and entanglement, over the feast of millions loaded on the backs of an entire people, must become a powerful voice at the ballot box and a force for AKEL.
Let’s move forward.
With honesty. Clarity. Sincerity.
