Statement by Marina Savva, member of the C.C. of AKEL on the “Cyprus Confidentials” press reports

15 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Cyprus is once again being dragged through the mud by international press reports that implicate it in activities of dubious legitimacy. The damage done to the country, Cyprus’ economy and prospects is immense and is linked to yesterday’s revelations, but also to previous revelations about cases that have still not been investigated.

The country continues to pay the price for the aftermath of the growth of institutional interwoven interests/entanglement and corruption that occurred under the previous government of Nicos Anastasiades and the Democratic Rally DISY party and which remain unpunished to this day.

We are not surprised that the name of Nicos Anastasiades is again in the frame. This shows the extent of his responsibility for the institutional corruption that rose sharply during his administration.

The State must proceed with thorough investigations and procedures to clear the name of Cyprus. It is the responsibility of the Christodoulides government to promote investigations in a transparent manner and where there is accountability punishment must be delivered.

The political will to do so will not be judged by the President’s statements, but by the results of his actions, if he does really take action, to stamp out the corruption.
