Statement by Giorgos Loukaides AKEL Parliamentary Representative on delivering AKEL’s contribution to the annual fund-raising Radiomarathon for those with special needs

First of all, I would like to thank and congratulate, on behalf of AKEL, all those involved in this year’s celebration of humanity and solidarity. I would particularly like to thank all the volunteers and all our fellow citizens who contribute to the Radio Marathon, either from their savings or from their surplus. Volunteerism is of particular importance and, of course, the humanity and solidarity that our people have generously offered throughout the decades of the existence of the annual Radio Marathon is necessary.

However, it isn’t enough and I would like to stress this point. The State’s role is imperative and decisive in the effort to support the vulnerable groups of the population. The culture of every country and society is judged primarily by the care and interest it shows for vulnerable groups of the population. Unfortunately our country is lagging behind significantly on this issue. Cyprus remains near the bottom of the table across Europe as far as social expenditure is concerned, while the deficits in infrastructures for people with disabilities are enormous.

For that reason, there needs to be much stronger action on the part of the state. Especially for this section of the population, it is crucial and important, among many other things, that infrastructures are developed further, which are very few when it comes to children over the age of 21. The concern of parents is when they pass away, what will happen to their children. This is one of the many issues that exist and the state must take responsibility.

This, of course, does not in any way diminish the value of the contribution of all those who work for the Radio Marathon. After all, our people have always shown feelings of humanity and solidarity that characterise them.
