AKEL does not stand idly by on the issue of price hikes

Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member Haris Polycarpou

1 November 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The latest increases in the price of milk add to the wave of increases in electricity, fuel and other essential goods, making the daily life of households even more difficult.

In the face of the Anastasiades-DISY government’s apathy, AKEL is not standing idly by, but is taking concrete initiatives:

First, AKEL has submitted a proposal for the approval of a draft bill by Parliament to reduce VAT on electricity from 19% to 9%, in order to support the economy as whole.

Second, AKEL calls on the government to proceed with the utilisation of the revenues from emissions trading, supporting vulnerable households and consumers in a targeted manner.

Third, AKEL reiterates the need to correct long-standing distortions by proposing the abolition of the imposition of VAT on fuel excise duty, in order to reduce the overall cost of fuel for consumers.

We will say it again: Whether the government admits it or not, price hikes are hurting society.

And price hikes aren’t addressed with excuses and half-truths, but with realistic and immediately implementable actions.

And that is precisely what AKEL demands should be done.
