Statement by Giorgos Loukaides, AKEL Parliamentary Representative after the Parliamentary Foreign and European Affairs Committee meeting

8 March 2022

A fruitful and constructive debate took place in the Parliamentary Foreign and European Affairs Committee, examining all the facts surrounding the Ukrainian crisis.

We would like to express our satisfaction because the Foreign Minister appeared to fully share the views we have expressed in the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs.

We would like to take this opportunity to stress the following:

  1. The need for an immediate end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a return to dialogue and diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
  2. It seems that there is a serious danger that Cyprus will pay a heavy price in relation to the Cyprus problem, given that Turkey, undisturbed, is presenting itself not only with a pretentious neutrality, but also as an honest broker in the Ukrainian crisis.
  3. We have stressed and underlined the need to immediately make a proper assessment of the cost and price to be paid by the Cyprus economy, households, working people and businesses, so that targeted and timely measures can be taken to support all those who will be affected by the deteriorating economic situation.
