Statement by Christina Nikolaou, Head of the Environment Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL on COP26

2 November 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Mr.Anastasiades announced that he will present ideas at the Glasgow Conference to tackle climate change and save the planet.

But the President should not forget that one’s contribution to saving the planet starts at home, in your own country. His government, the government of the DISY party for eight years:

– Lags far behind in making use of renewable energy resources,

– Shifts the cost of our dependence from conventional fuels and the fines from pollutants to every household.

– It is to blame for huge ecological crimes such as the one at the Sea Caves in Peyia.

– It has failed to elaborate a plan for the protection of the most important habitat of our island, namely the Akamas peninsula.

– It is systematically engaging in the licensing of anarchic and anti-environmental developments

– It has received numerous warnings from the European Commission for violation of environmental directives.

Cyprus, like the whole planet, can only hope if environmental parameters are put over and above powerful economic interests.
