Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the President’s referral of the law on evictions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th October 2020, Nicosia

The Anastasiades-DISY government makes referrals and appeals to the Supreme Court to annul every legislation protecting citizen’s social rights, whereas everything that serves the banks and big business, the government does all it can to impose it.

Now President Anastasiades has proceeded with the referral of the legislation approved by the House of Representatives, which protects socially vulnerable tenants from the eviction process in the conditions of the pandemic. It is not enough that the government has not taken any initiative to give a solution to the burning issue of rents which in recent months has led to the suffocation of households and small businesses. Now the Anastasiades-DISY government wants to annul even the social protection measures approved by the House. This government has also done the same with legislation protecting borrowers from foreclosures and the unfair and illegal terms of the banks. He did the same with the court decision that vindicated thousands of working teachers who in 2013 were unilaterally transformed into self-employed.

The Anastasiades-DISY government with glaring social insensitivity chooses to leave families and small businesses unprotected from the risk of literally finding themselves on the street. President Anastasiades’ referral must be rejected by Parliament and AKEL calls on all opposition forces to join forces to protect the socially vulnerable groups affected by the pandemic.
