Solidarity with the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot community
Statement by Neoklis Sylikiotis, AKEL Political Bureau member and MEP
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th August 2016, Nicosia
The mobilization of the Turkish Cypriot community, mostly young people, against Turkey’s attempts to integrate the occupied areas has achieved an important victory.
The decision of the so-called “Constitutional Court” after the recourse of Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to the “Court” vindicates even if partially the position of the platform «Reddediyoruz – We reject.” The platform, with the participation in its ranks of tens of Turkish Cypriot organizations and trade unions, was in the forefront of the mass protest mobilizations over the past few weeks.
As AKEL, we express once again our solidarity with the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots against the threats issued by Ankara.
The struggle of the Turkish Cypriots against the integration of the occupied areas, which will lead to the assimilation and disappearance of the Turkish Cypriot community, is part of our common struggle for the liberation of Cyprus from the occupation and for the reunification of our country and people.
