Solidarity with the people of Cuba! End the US embargo against Cuba!

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th October 2016, Nicosia

int cubaThe UN General Assembly is called upon to take a position on 26th October against the ongoing economic, financial and trade embargo of Cuba by the US which has been continuing for 54 years; an embargo that is blatantly violating International Law by imposing the legislation of the US on third countries. An embargo that aims to deprive the Cuban people of the right to determine their own future by themselves and which over time has deprived Cuba of billions of dollars, a fact that has had a huge impact on the country’s economy and standard of living.

The vote is taking place for the 25th consecutive time and the relevant resolution to denounce the embargo is expected to be approved once again by almost every member-state of the United Nations.

Although the two countries proceeded in 2014 to the restoration of diplomatic relations, the US continues to impose the embargo in most areas that could become beneficial to the peoples of both countries, such as those in health and energy.

At the same time the US are not abandoning their attempts at subversion and intervention in Cuba’s internal affairs on pretexts such as the “development of democracy” or political and labour rights. The USA’s long-standing imperialist and subversive role against the people of Cuba and the peoples of Latin American countries is well-known.

The US blockade against Cuba is also political-ideological, targeting the ideals of socialist Revolution which for many peoples all over the world represent a beacon of hope.

AKEL reaffirms its solidarity with socialist Cuba and the struggles of the Cuban people, and recalls that Cuba and its people stand on the side of Cyprus, as they have done at every difficult moment Cyprus faced since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.
