Social tourism should be promoted for families on low incomes, workers and pensioners

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

The hotels should open for Cypriots

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th April 2021, Nicosia

The measure prohibiting Cypriot citizens from staying at local hotels is ridiculous in every way. The measure that stipulates that foreign visitors staying in accommodation can sit indoors in hotel restaurants, while Cypriots must sit outdoors is also completely absurd.

One wonders what the reasoning was behind this measure taken by the government. In fact, it is ridiculous for the government to propagate a scheme for domestic tourism, at a time when this is in essence prohibited.

AKEL calls on the government to immediately review this measure and permit citizens to take their vacations in their country. By doing so, the tourist industry, its workers and related sectors will be supported in practice.

We urge the government and competent Deputy Ministry to take into account AKEL’s comprehensive proposal on tourism with a view to promoting Cyprus as a health-safe destination. At the same time, we insist on the promotion of social tourism so that families on low incomes, working people and pensioners can spend their holidays in Cyprus.
