Public statements made by both sides on the issues under discussion not only do not help, but cause concern
AKEL strongly believes that while talks are underway, the numerous public statements made by both sides on the issues under discussion not only do not help, but instead cause concern. Such statements were those made by Mr. Akinci yesterday.
AKEL calls on the involved parties to limit public statements and that they focus on the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. Before us there is an agreed procedure which must be utilized so as to fulfill the long-lasting goal of the solution.
A solution that will terminate the occupation and reunite the country and the people within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant UN resolutions.
A Solution that will provide for one state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality, where human rights and basic freedoms will be applied.
Besides the disagreements on the substance, which can only be resolved at the negotiating table, it is imperative that the procedural outstanding issues are agreed which, if they are not resolved in a timely and accurate manner will in all probability cause problems with substantial implications in Geneva.
It is imperative that the President and his staff must work very concretely towards this end.
AKEL replies to DIKO President’s statements
All that the President of DIKO party Mr. Papadopoulos said yesterday about the undermining of the Republic of Cyprus, all the talk about disunity, intimidation, deception and about attempts at vindication with regards 2004 cannot be and do not relate to AKEL.
It is not AKEL that is scaremongering on a daily basis.
It is not AKEL that is rejecting everything without submitting positions.
It is not AKEL that is speaking in vague terms and without putting forth any arguments and launching aphorisms and making unsubstantiated accusations.
AKEL has no need to do all those actions Mr. Papadopoulos referred to because AKEL has positions, is characterized by consistency and acts in a serious and responsible manner towards the country and the people.
Those circles and forces who do not have serious and realistic positions and proposals accuse and denigrate. Those trying to purse their political goals by projecting unrealistic slogans and outrageous labels are making accusations and defaming others.
Citizens can judge the behavior of each and every one.
As AKEL we are not going to follow Mr. Papadopoulos’ example.
