Problems, including the Cyprus problem, must be solved based on international law and the relevant UN resolutions

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the US Secretary of State’s visit to Cyprus

The US too will be judged by their actions, not declarations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th September 2020, Nicosia

The US Secretary of State, Mr. Pompeo, in the statements he made during his visit to Cyprus, did not add anything new about his country’s positions on the situation in our region, the sovereign rights of Cyprus regarding the Exclusive Economic Zone and the distribution of the revenues from the natural gas between the two Cypriot communities and the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of bi-communal, bi-zonal federation.

The dangerous situation in the region, which is being provoked by Turkey’s illegal and provocative actions, demands the intensification of the efforts for a de-escalation and the promotion of dialogue to find solutions to problems, including the Cyprus problem as well, on the basis of international law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations. The USA too must work in this direction, which for sure will be judged – just like everyone else – by their actions and not by their declarations.

At the same time, Mr. Pompeo reiterated his country’s unacceptable demand that the Republic of Cyprus break its relations with a permanent member of the UN Security Council, namely the Russian Federation, to serve the self-seeking and aggressive plans of the US in the region. If this were eventually to be done, it will have catastrophic consequences for the vital interests of our country.

It would be interesting to know what the reaction of the President of the Republic was to this demand that was put forth by the US, which Mr. Pompeo reiterated. Up till now, the government has never given clear answers to this unacceptable demand of the USA and at the same time it is celebrating the Menendez-Rubio Law, which provides for everything that Mr. Pompeo demanded yesterday.

The Cypriot government must take a very clear position on this issue.
