President Christodoulides must move ahead by projecting consistency to the basis of a solution
AKEL on the Cyprus problem
9 May 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
AKEL’s wish and hope is that the new visit of the UN Secretary General’s envoy on Cyprus will lead to a breach of the current deadlock on the Cyprus problem. This deadlock, which is the longest in the history of the Cyprus problem, combined with the apportioning of responsibility for it on both communities since 2017 and onwards, constitutes the ground on which the occupying power Turkey is creating new dangerous and illegal fait accompli against Cyprus and its people.
For AKEL, it is a given fact that the main obstacle to the resumption of the negotiations is Turkey and Tatar’s insistence on “sovereign equality” and a two state solution. However, what is required is to cancel in practice this unacceptable demand and to move forward towards the resumption of the talks on the agreed basis and framework. We must avoid both prolonging the current deadlock and the possibility of a new breakdown, which would have, if not fatal, most certainly negative consequences for the Cyprus problem.
AKEL underlines that President Christodoulides and the Greek Cypriot side must move ahead by projecting consistency to the basis of a solution, its absolute readiness to resume the talks on the basis of the Guterres Framework and the negotiating acquis [body of work], but at the same time, to submit a proposal on energy issues that would make the solution of the Cyprus problem beneficial for all sides.
Within the same context, there is a need for practical implementation of the declared position of the Republic of Cyprus for a positive agenda towards the Turkish Cypriot community. The proposal that has been submitted by AKEL some time ago is precisely a proposal that does not go beyond the “red lines” of the Republic of Cyprus, which at the same time can create momentum.
We hope that this time the President of the Republic will brief the political forces promptly, given AKEL’s stated position to contribute in every way towards the breaking the deadlock and to the resumption of a procedure aiming at a solution of the Cyprus problem.
