President aiming to forge required majorities with the “usual suspects” after the elections for the sell-out of CYTA

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd March 2016, Nicosia

cyta1Despite the fact that a few days ago President Anastasiades again claimed that he remained consistent to his pledge that he would not proceed to the privatization of the profitable Semi-governmental organizations, in view of the certainty of the government’s Bills with regards the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) being rejected, yesterday he gave the impression of being determined to withdraw them. He is obviously thinking that in doing so he will be in a position after the elections to forge the necessary majorities in parliament with the “usual suspects” in order to be able to deliver public wealth and assets to big private capital.

This development confirms how correct the decision was to discuss the Bills before the election, so that the intentions and positions of each given political force is revealed, along with the mockery of citizens by the leadership and Government of DISY-Anastasiades. To the extent that this position of the President is implemented in practice, tax payers, working people and consumers, whose interests will be damaged by the sell-out of public wealth and assets, must then this time, in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections, assess correctly the credibility of the new pledges of Mr. Anastasiades, the leadership of DISY and their neoliberal associates.
