Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou on the Turkish Foreign Minister’s position

The position expressed by the Turkish Foreign Minister to the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on the Cyprus problem Jane Hall Lute, clashes with the negotiation basis and basis of the solution of the Cyprus issue, as defined by the Resolutions of the UN Security Council. It also clashes with what the UN Secretary-General is indicating for a new initiative to be undertaken.
The demand put forth by Turkey and Tatar for a two-state solution is unequivocally and clearly rejected by every Cypriot, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, who loves his/her homeland and its future. Partition is a deadly danger for all Cypriots. For the Greek Cypriots, it will mean the definitive loss of half of their homeland and for the Turkish Cypriots, the gradual extinction of their community. Such a development will also mean a new cycle of permanent tension and insecurity on our island, with unpredictable dangers for peace and the future of coming generations in their homeland.
The current situation in Cyprus is literally on the edge. Today, the consequences of the absence of any negotiation during the previous years are becoming visible again. Three and a half years were allowed to pass by without being made use of, while the leader of the Turkish Cypriots was a supporter of a federal solution. The President’s retractions are also responsible too for this state of affairs.
AKEL does not just exercise criticism. It chooses to make its own creative contribution through the comprehensive proposal we have submitted to the President of the Republic on how the Greek Cypriot community must act in the period ahead of us. Our goal should be to neutralize any attempt to bring a two-state solution to the negotiating table and move things forward on the agreed basis and framework.
