Our side must study and plan how to create the preconditions for the continuation of the negotiations

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th July 2017, Nicosia

According to the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus, Mr. Eide, following the briefing of the United Nations Security Council regarding the Cyprus problem, some important conclusions emerge:

  1. The UN does not consider that the procedure on the Cyprus problem has collapsed and wishes to see its continuation. This is positive.
  2. As far as the continuation of the procedure is concerned, the UN puts the responsibility on the two Cypriot sides.
  3. The international organization also considers that the procedure should not start from scratch, but essentially from where the negotiations have been suspended in Switzerland.

The negotiations have created an acquis that must be utilized. Consequently, with a chance of success.

Towards this end, the conclusions of the Guterres framework must be utilized, especially all that it provides for on security and guarantee issues. The Republic of Cyprus finds broad international support on these issues and this should be used correspondingly even at this juncture.
