On the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulides – Article by Andros Kyprianoy – former AKEL General Secretary

Let me make it clear, of course, that I don’t expect N. Christodoulides or his election campaign team to respond

Regarding Christodoulides’ candidacy one could say a lot. On the political level one could point out his erroneous miscalculations he made about the supposed “shielding” of the Exclusive Economic Zone [of the Republic of Cyprus] that in the end proved to be non-existent, the so-called “pre-election communications tricks” by the Turkish side in Famagusta that became a nightmare, the supposed “imposition of sanctions that will hurt Turkey” which didn’t materialise, and the drilling rigs that Turkey would supposedly not secure while it ended up with four drilling ships.

One could also mention the copy paste made of a large part of Ioannis Kasoulides’ 2008 election campaign speech or his orders for the creation of fake accounts to bash his opponents and journalists which in itself should have been enough to strip him of his candidacy.

But apart from the above, which is extremely important, there is another major contradiction that needs to be addressed. I make it clear, of course, that I don’t expect N. Christodoulides or his staff to reply to it. On the contrary, I am sure that, on the advice of his PR communication expert, he will follow the same tactics as on all other issues.

That’s to say, “Keep silent on the issue until the dust settles. They will eventually get tired of referring to it.”

What is this contradiction? N. Christodoulides declares himself proud to be a member of the ruling DISY party. Indeed, if Av. Neophytou was not the DISY presidential candidate, it is most likely that he would have been the chosen candidate of DISY.

He is proud of his participation in the Anastasiades government, describing it as a very good and incorruptible administration.

On the contrary, DIKO and EDEK describe the Anastasiades government as the most corrupt. They say they could not cooperate with the anti-social and corrupt DISY party. That their main goal was to drive DISY out of power.

What policy will Mr. Christodoulides implement if he is elected?

Will it be his own, when he says he is a proud DISY member?

Of Nicolas Papadopoulos and the Democratic Party DIKO?

Of Marinos Sizopoulos and the social democratic EDEK?

Especially on the Cyprus problem, where their positions all clash on the key issue, namely the question of the framework for a solution, what will N.Christodoulides do?

All this is a mockery of the people. It cannot and should not be tolerated by the voters.
