Another negative record illustrating the people’s suffering

Statement of Georgoos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd January 2016, Nicosia

econ statisticsThe two reports of the European Commission and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) published yesterday show, once again, the real consequences of the implementation of the Memoranda and austerity policies imposed on the working people in Cyprus by the Anastasiades-DISY party government.

  • Almost all contracts for temporary employment in the private sector are made without the desire of the employee.
  • Part-time employment for the majority of workers is seen as a necessity rather than their own desire.
  • Cyprus continues to record another negative first position, among many others, that is to say the biggest increase in the long-term unemployed.

The above figures do not represent mere statistical data among so many others. They concern tens of thousands of our fellow citizens who are suffering, neither are these indexes politically neutral. They are the result of the deliberate policy implemented by the government for the deregulation of terms of employment in Cyprus – for piecework, a seven days working week without insurance and security. This is the current government’s vision for the working people.

They will continue to find us opposing them, combating this political choice they have made.
