Need for reflection on the ongoing stalemate surrounding the Cyprus problem
17 February 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
On the occasion of the article written by María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, the need once again emerges for a real reflection on the ongoing stalemate surrounding the Cyprus problem and on the passing of time without any clear steps forward being recorded. This stalemate was and is the breeding ground for the creation of new negative faits accomplis.
AKEL insists that the key issue at this current stage is the reaffirmation of the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, safeguarding all the convergences achieved up to Crans-Montana, and to demonstrate a readiness for the completion of the negotiations on the remaining issues on the basis of the Guterres Framework. By pursuing this position, we will return to the point “one mile before the solution” and then everyone will be judged on their intentions.
AKEL, as it has already communicated to the President of the Republic, is ready to contribute in this direction through the submission of proposals it has elaborated and which it is ready to present to him and the National Council. Recognizing that the climate that will develop in the coming months is likely to be decisive with regards the effort to resume the negotiations and the prospects of solving the Cyprus problem, AKEL stresses the need for the assumption of convincing initiatives and the adoption of a “road map” that will serve the prospect for a successful outcome.
