AKEL is participating in the effort to restore the Monument in Kaisariani, Greece, which was recently desecrated by fascist groups. The Monument is dedicated to the 200 communists who were executed by the Nazi occupation forces on May Day 1944 in Kaisariani, a page in history that is one of the most gut-wrenching awe-inspiring moments in modern Greece and represents an indelible testimony to the contribution of the Greek people to the Resistance against Hitlerism.
It is no coincidence that the vandalism of the Monument took place just a few days after the sensational documents showing the last moments before the execution of the 200 patriotic communists were made public, reminding us of the greatness of their self-sacrifice but also of the anti-fascist militant traditions of the Greek people.
The peoples of Cyprus and Greece are linked by unbreakable bonds but also shared painful experiences of fascism, which is precisely why we consider it our duty to contribute to the defence of democratic historical memory in our countries and internationally.
AKEL, after consultation with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), is making its own contribution through a symbolic donation of 1,000 euros to the Municipality of Kaisariani for speeding up the restoration of the Monument.
