Mobilisations in solidarity with the Greek people

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9th February 2015, Nicosia

Greece UprisingAKEL, within the framework of its solidarity towards the Greek people, calls on the people to participate in mass numbers in the two meetings to express support with struggling Greece which are being organised this Wednesday and Sunday by the Solidarity Network of Greek Citizens in Cyprus.

The need to express solidarity towards the Greek people is not only linked with the strong ties of our two peoples. It is at the same time irrevocably connected to the struggle of the working people and peoples of Europe against the anti-social dead-end policies of austerity imposed by by the ruling circles of Brussels and against their devastating consequences on European societies.

Consequently, it is evident that if the struggle of the Greek people has a positive outcome then the benefits will affect Europe in general and its peoples, strengthening the efforts for another Europe, a Europe of growth and development, social cohesion, solidarity, the respect of labour and human rights.

Serving the interests of the Cypriot people and expressing its solidarity with the Greek people, AKEL reiterates that the Cyprus government, based on the pledge it had made in public before the Prime Minister of Greece, must abandon its ideological obsessions and side only with the Greek government in the forthcoming Eurogroup meeting.

On their part, the six Cypriot Members of the European Parliament must in a coordinated and methodological manner seek to secure the support of their Political Groups for the just and logical demands of the new Greek government.

AKEL recalls that the two meetings are being held this Wednesday at 18:00 p.m. and on Sunday 15th February 2015 at 17:00 p.m. outside the building of the Delegation of the European Union “House of Europe”, Vironas Avenue 20, in Nicosia.
