An AKEL delegation, headed by the General Secretary of the C.C. Stefanos Stefanou, had a meeting today with a delegation from the Initiative Group against the installation of barbed wires in the Akaki region.

On behalf of the Initiative Group, the political issue and erroneous messages being conveyed by the installation of barbed wires in the area on the pretext of supposedly stopping the flow of migrants from the occupied territories to the free areas was raised in the strongest terms.  The problems created for rural development, security, accessibility for residents and many other problems caused by the Anastasiades-DISY government’s authoritarian and unilateral decision to install barbed wires were also raised.

AKEL shares the concerns and stands by the residents of the area demanding the immediate removal of the barbed wires. The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL assured the Group that with Parliament resuming its work, the whole issue will be tabled for discussion in the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs so that the relevant government bodies, but also those affected, express their position on the matter and discuss an immediate response to the problems that have arisen.
