A delegation of AKEL, headed by Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loucaides toured the fire-affected communities of Larnaca and Limassol

In his statements after the tour, Giorgos Loucaides said:

“We have revisited the fire affected region and communities dramatically affected by the deadly fires. We have once again seen the enormity of the disaster, but also witnessed in our contact with the people their will, courage, strength and determination to address the enormous problems and challenges caused by the deadly fire.

Our presence here has to do with the pledge we have made to constantly monitor the implementation of the measures that have been decided so that first of all real, immediate and effective support is provided in a meaningful way to those who have been affected, but at the same time so that we can achieve the restoration of the area’s environment.

We had the opportunity in a meeting with community leaders of the area and officials from the Ministries of Interior, Agriculture and Labour to check the progress of the implementation of the measures decided by the Council of Ministers, to listen to community leaders and residents and, at the same time, we have committed ourselves to continue the monitoring, both inside and outside Parliament, with our presence here again, but also with the examination of all the issues that have arisen in the relevant Parliamentary Committees – namely the Labour, Internal Affairs, Agriculture and Environment Committees.

Finally, permit me to mention that the money AKEL has collected to support the residents of the area has been delivered today to the local communities affected as an expression of our humble support and solidarity to the victims of this deadly fire.

The delegation of AKEL also included Larnaca and Limassol AKEL District Secretaries Chrystalla Antoniou and Giorgos Georgiou, AKEL MP’s Andros Kafkalias, Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Committee, Yiannakis Gavriel, Chairman of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee and Marina Nicolaou, as well as other militants of the AKEL District Committees.”
