23 July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Today, Friday 23 July 2021, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met with the Ambassador of the United States of America to Cyprus, Judith G. Garber. At the meeting, which took place at the AKEL Central Committee offices, the General Secretary of AKEL raised the issue of the flagrant violation of the Resolutions of the UN Security Council by Turkey regarding its announcements on Famagusta.

The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou pointed out that such actions cause additional obstacles to the effort to solve the Cyprus problem. He stressed that there is an immediate need for the international community to react clearly and denounce the Turkish moves and noted that the problems caused by the occupation and Turkey’s behavior can only be definitively addressed through a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

Finally, the General Secretary of AKEL reiterated AKEL’s position for the resumption of the talks from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana, with the aim of reaching a solution on the agreed basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as outlined in the Resolutions of the United Nations. He also briefed the US Ambassador of the proposal submitted by AKEL regarding both the resumption of the negotiation procedure and the utilisation of natural gas in a way that would act as a catalyst for the resumption of the talks as repeatedly requested by the Secretary General of the UN in his Reports.
