“We must be committed to the goal of the solution of the Cyprus problem and all our actions must serve this goal, otherwise we will enable Turkey to hide behind our own regressions, constantly provoking problems,” the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou declared, speaking last night in Limassol.
A. Kyprianou referred to reports that a part of the beach in the fenced off area of Varosha will be opened, pointing out that this issue has existed for years. He recalled that “AKEL was always warning that for Turkey not to proceed to new fait accompli, it is imperative that a substantive dialogue for the solution must be conducted and that whenever there was a deadlock in the talks, Turkey proceeded to impose new fait accompli to force us to go to the negotiations on its own terms, but they did not listen to us”.
The Foreign Minister was saying that “what they are saying these things about Famagusta for internal consumption purposes and there is no reason for concern”. Recently DISY President Averof Neophytou told us that “I am not worried”, noting that “now they understand that Turkey isn’t engaged in communication tricks and unfortunately for us it is ready to proceed (in its plans)”.
The General Secretary of AKEL, expressing the wish that “the government react calmly and not in a way suggested by officials of the ruling DISY party which would lead us to self-destruction”, stressed the need for them “to see the problems in their proper dimensions, to address them with the necessary seriousness and to chart tactics that will have as their goal the resumption of substantive negotiations with a view to finding a solution.”
