Letter from the General Secretary of AKEL to the Attorney General

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, today sent a letter to the Attorney General asking for an immediate investigation to be conducted into the unacceptable racist behaviour of a Municipal Councilor in Limassol last Friday.

The letter follows in full:

“On Friday, September 1, 2023 in Limassol, in addition to all the other hate incidents that unfolded and for which society expects the exemplary punishment of the perpetrators, a specific incident took place which I feel obliged to bring to your attention for investigation.

This is the case of an alleged Limassol Municipal Councilor who, according to audiovisual material posted on Social Media, appears to be wandering the streets of Limassol on Friday night, swearing vulgarly and shouting at police officers “I’m telling you from now on, from here on, wherever I find a delivery boy I will kill him”.

Such behaviour is unacceptable, especially when it comes from officials who ought to respect the office they hold and take special care of their behaviour. At the same time, such behaviour is punishable and, inter alia, constitutes hate rhetoric. We therefore request that this incident be investigated and that you inform us of the results of the investigation.

The material in question is enclosed.

Thank you very much.

Yours sincerely,

Stefanos Stefanou

General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL
