7 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou today sent a letter to the President of the Republic on the critical situation developing in the grain market and livestock farming, as well as o the urgent need for immediate measures to be taken to support the sector in order to normalize the situation.
The letter follows:
“With this letter I wish to bring to your attention the critical situation developing in the grain and livestock market and the urgent need for immediate measures to be taken to support the sector so as to normalize the situation.
The sharp increases in recent months in the price of grain, fuel and electricity, combined with the closure of the Cyprus Grain Commission, have put livestock farmers in a difficult situation and serious shortages of grain have begun to appear on the market.
It should be noted that the state has not ensured that grain reserves have been kept in stock, as provided for in the relevant legislation, which was approved last March and whose implementation is pending.
If measures are not taken immediately, the problems will inevitably affect other sectors, which will have a serious impact on the economy with price increases and shortages in products.
The government must examine immediately the situation as it is evolving and procced swiftly to elaborate a comprehensive plan to provide support towards the livestock sector so that it can overcome the current difficulties.”
