It is important to look at the mandate of the envoy
Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL:
13 October 2023, ‘Astra’ radio
No crisis is forever frozen and no one should assume that any temporariness is unchangeable and this is what AKEL has always been saying, the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou pointed out to ‘Astra’, commenting on the situation in Israel and Gaza in relation to the Cyprus problem.
Replying to a question, S.Stefanou said that AKEL has information that the Turkish Cypriot side has accepted the appointment of an envoy, noting that it is important to see the mandate of his mandate, which he said must be clear and should concern the resumption of the talks from where they had remained in 2017 on the basis of the Guterres Framework and the convergences that have been recorded so far.
The General Secretary of AKEL added that it is important which person will be appointed to the position of an envoy, and if we want to achieve the goal of breaking the deadlock this must be done by the government taking initiatives and trying to create momentum aiming at the resumption of the negotiations.
S.Stefanou said that we should remain consistent to the agreed basis for a solution of Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation without any footnotes, give incentives to Turkey without crossing any “red lines”, such as on energy issues, while the government must also announce the measures towards the Turkish Cypriot community which it has been saying for days that they are ready, but doesn’t announce them.
