International interest on the Cyprus problem should be channeled towards a solution based on principles

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th April 2016, Nicosia

cyprus NATO cprThe visit of US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland to Cyprus appears to be linked to the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem. AKEL considers the international interest on the Cyprus problem as welcome and needed, as long as our side utilizes it correctly by channeling it towards a correct and viable solution based on principles.

The prevalence of phobic syndromes and of an unproductive negativity towards any international interest on the Cyprus problem by all those forces and circles who do not want a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution offers the worst service to our national cause, since correspondingly the possible disregard of any dangers that may arise from the separate aspirations or expediencies of any third parties on the Cyprus problem do not help in any way at all.

Now that developments fully justify AKEL on the Cyprus problem as well, we hope that everyone, without exception, will behave in a correspondingly responsible manner so as to create the best possible preconditions for the utilization of this current coincidence in order to achieve the liberation and reunification of our country.
